South Carolina-Providence Preview

The South Carolina Gamecocks (2-4) will welcome Big East foe Providence (5-2) to Colonial Life Arena Thursday night in the Big East/SEC Challenge.

Providence comes into the game after a win against Holy Cross, but have lost two of their last three, including back to back losses to Iowa State and Northern Iowa.  The Friars are led by junior guard Vince Council, who averages 18.0 points per game, and sophomore guard Gerard Coleman, who averages 16.7 points per contest.

In the rebounding department, freshman forward LaDontae Henton leads the Friars with 8.1 boards per game and also averages 11.4 points per game, making him one of Providence's most versatile threats on the hardwood.

In Providence's win over Holy Cross, guard Bryce Cotton led the Friars with 24 points.

The Gamecocks are coming back home for the first time since a 61-57 win over Mississippi Valley State.  South Carolina is coming off of losses to then-No. 1 UNC and Southern California in the Las Vegas Invitational.

Senior Malik Cooke leads the Gamecocks with over 11 points per game followed by guard Eric Smith, who averages 8.3 per game.  R.J. Slawson and Demontre Harris both lead South Carolina in rebounding, averaging 5.3 boards per contest.

Harris led the Gamecocks in scoring in their 63-60 loss to So. California, but has struggled scoring the ball so far this season. South Carolina had trouble guarding the three vs. So. California, allowing Maurice Jones to go seven for seven from beyond the arc, scoring 28 points in the Trojan victory.

The Gamecocks are going to need a strong game out of freshman Anthony Gill if they are going to want to win this game.  Gill, despite not playing many minutes due to foul trouble, has been able to make a strong impact for South Carolina.  He averages over eight points per game and over five rebounds per contest and if he's able to avoid foul trouble early, he could keep the Gamecocks in this one.

The Friars aren't in great form right now and the Gamecocks are coming off of a close loss to one of the best teams they've played so far this season.  I think South Carolina has the edge in this game with the home court advantage and see the Gamecocks recording their third win of the season on Thursday night over the Providence Friars.

Clemson-South Carolina Preview

The No. 14 South Carolina Gamecocks (9-2, 6-2) will host No. 18 Clemson Tigers (9-2, 6-2) this Saturday night at 7:45 p.m. ET at Williams Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC.

The Tigers are coming in off of a loss to lowly NC State 37-13, and have lost two of their last three ballgames.  The Tigers have also lost the last two games in this rivalry, including a 29-7 loss last year at home in Death Valley.

Clemson will play in next week's ACC Championship Game in Charlotte, NC, but this team has hardly looked like a BCS team in the past several weeks.

"We're lucky we hadn't lost all three," coach Dabo Swinney said after last Saturday's loss at North Carolina State.

QB Tahj Boyd threw two interceptions and lost a fumble, while Mike Bellamy also lost a fumble against the Wolfpack this past weekend.  Clemson's offense also didn't reach the 200 yard mark until late in the game, and didn't score a touchdown until their final drive.

"A key to us winning is to keep from turning the ball over," Clemson tight end Brandon Ford said. "If we can execute like we did the first eight games, that should be OK."

That may be an issue this week against the Gamecocks highly ranked defensive unit, which has been the strongest part of the team this season.

South Carolina's defense is ranked sixth in the country in turnovers with 29 and are looking to win three straight in The Battle of the Palmetto State for the first time since 1968-70.  Although the Gamecocks are missing out on the SEC Championship Game next week, this is a big match-up that South Carolina really wants to win.

"If you're not in the conference championship game, this becomes the biggest game of the year for us," coach Steve Spurrier said.

Even though the Gamecocks will not participate in the SEC Title Game, they have a chance to accomplish some big things.  If South Carolina wins this Saturday, the Gamecocks will have won 10 games in a season for just the second time in school history, tying the record set by the 1984 Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks are hoping for a repeat performance from last week out of their offensive unit.  The Gamecocks lit up The Citadel for 473 yards, including 217 yards and three touchdowns from Connor Shaw and another 109 yards and two scores from Brandon Wilds.

The Tigers will need to match the intensity of the Gamecocks if they want to rebound with a win Saturday night.  If the Gamecocks can get another solid outing from the offense, Clemson could be in trouble early.

Prediction:
#14 South Carolina 21  #18 Clemson 17

South Carolina vs. Florida Preview

The No. 15 South Carolina Gamecocks (7-2, 5-2) will welcome SEC Eastern Division rival Florida (5-4, 3-4) to Columbia this Saturday afternoon for a 12 p.m. ET kick-off at Williams Brice Stadium.

The Gamecocks are coming off of a 44-28 loss at the hands of the Arkansas Razorbacks, leaving Georgia in the driver's seat in the SEC East.  If the Gamecocks are to make it back to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game, they will need a win over Florida and a Georgia loss to either Auburn or Kentucky in the next two weeks.

Both Florida and South Carolina had their starting quarterbacks taken out of last week's games due to injury.  John Brantley was injured late in Florida's 26-21 win over Vanderbilt and Connor Shaw left the game at Arkansas with a concussion.  Both Shaw and Brantley are expected to start this weekend.

"We think Connor will be alright by the middle of the week," said Head Coach Steve Spurrier at his weekly press conference on Tuesday. "Clint Haggard, our athletic trainer, gave him the test to see how he's doing and he's doing pretty well."

The injury to Shaw is not the only one that the Gamecocks will be worrying about this week.  Safety DeVonte Holloman was also concussed in last week's game and his status is doubtful for Saturday.  Antonio Allen sat out last weekend's game with a sore neck, but the Gamecocks expect to have him back for the Florida game.

"DeVonte Holloman is still hurt," said Spurrier. "Antonio Allen should be back. He was running around last night for the first time in a week. Hopefully he'll be able to play the entire game for us."

Florida snapped a four game losing streak last Saturday, defeating Vanderbilt 26-21.  John Brantley threw for 173 yards as Jeff Demps ran for a career high 158 yards in Florida's win.

This is a must win game for South Carolina, but the Gators will definitely be looking for revenge for the beat-down the Gamecocks delivered in The Swamp last November.

Predicton:
#15 South Carolina 17  Florida 14

South Carolina at Arkansas Preview

The No. 10 South Carolina Gamecocks (7-1, 5-1) will travel to Fayettville, Ark. to take on the No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks (7-1, 3-1) this Saturday night at Razorback Stadium.

The Gamecocks are coming into this game off of a 14-3 win at Tennessee last weekend.  Freshman running back Brandon Wilds made his first career start in place of injured running back Marcus Lattimore and filled in nicely, carrying the ball 28 times for 137 yards while also recording three catches for 31 yards.

"Brandon did a lot of good things in that Tennessee game," said Coach Steve Spurrier at his weekly press conference. "Some things happened that hopefully he can learn from also. Going out for passes a couple of times, he left Connor (Shaw) and sort of drifted on him a couple of times. We believe he can be better in certain areas, but he's a natural runner. Brandon is an excellent runner with the ball. He has a good body lean, shakes guys off. He has a knack. He was able to show it last week. Hopefully we can get a bunch of yards. We're not a great passing team so we better be able to run successfully."

Connor Shaw had a less than impressive performance, but did his job, managing the Gamecocks to a 11 point win in a place where they'd only won once before.  He finished the game 10-for-18, 87 yards and a touchdown, he also ran for a touchdown in the third quarter to cap a 98 yard drive.

The defense played another great game for Carolina, holding Tennessee to just three points.  This is the third time this season that the Gamecocks have held an opponent to a field goal.

"We've simplified a lot of our coverages to where we don't have that many and (commit) fewer mistakes," said Spurrier. "That's a big part of it. Just the guys playing hard, playing their assignments, playing with effort and getting a pretty consistent rush has been helpful. We have good athletes. When they know what to do and are in position, I know that's helped us this year compared to what we did last year."

Arkansas is coming in off of a scare, winning 31-28 at Vanderbilt last week, in which the difference in the game was a missed 27 yard field goal in the closing seconds.  Arkansas also escaped with a 29-23 victory at Ole Miss the week before.

If the Gamecocks are going to win this weekend at Arkansas, the first thing they will need to focus on is the Razorbacks' lethal passing attack, led by quarterback Tyler Wilson.  Arkansas ranks ninth in the country in passing offense, and leads the SEC in the category.

Spurrier acknowledged the impressive statistics that the Razorbacks have been able to put up this year in his Tuesday press conference.

"I really don't watch other teams' offenses that much," Spurrier said. "I try to watch the defense and see if we can find some ball plays to hit here and there. Obviously (Tyler Wilson's) statistics are very good. Watching him against Vandy, he stays and makes the throws. He got hit a bunch of times. He's a tough kid and plays with courage. He'll stay in the pocket and make the throws. I admire the way he plays certainly."

Arkansas doesn't match up well against the run, however, which could present some problems for them on defense.  They rank 89th in the country in rushing defense, whereas Carolina ranks in the top 25 in rushing offense, 2nd in the SEC, averaging over 200 yards per game on the ground.

The Gamecocks are also looking to avenge a 41-20 loss at home last season to Arkansas.  This promises to be a great game in which both teams both have shots at BCS bowls this upcoming postseason.

Prediction:
#10 South Carolina 28  #8 Arkansas 27

South Carolina at Tennessee Preview

The No. 14 South Carolina Gamecocks (6-1, 4-1) will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. this Saturday night to play the Tennessee Volunteers (3-4, 0-4) in a SEC Eastern Division battle.

The Gamecocks are coming off of their lone bye week of the 2011 season and will be looking to build on a 14-12 win over Mississippi State two weeks ago.  This will be South Carolina's first game without their star running back Marcus Lattimore in the backfield.  He'll instead be cheering the team on from the sidelines.

"Getting ready to play Tennessee again," said Steve Spurrier, Tuesday afternoon. "It's always a big game for the University of South Carolina. I don't know how big a game we are to them. They still lead the overall series pretty big; 22 wins and five losses."

South Carolina has only beaten Tennessee once in Knoxville in 15 chances.

Filling in at running back for the Gamecocks will be true freshman Brandon Wilds, who has carried the ball 13 times this year for 75 yards.

"Brandon (Wilds) again is our starter," Spurrier said. "He's been healthy all season and has been practicing more. We think he's better prepared to play than Kenny (Miles) now because of Kenny's wrist, but he was out there last night and Kenny should get some playing time."

The Gamecocks are sitting at 6-1 and are tied at 4-1 with the Georgia Bulldogs for first in the SEC Eastern Division standings. This game starts the most difficult part of their schedule and South Carolina will need to play some of their best football in the final five games of the season to get back to Atlanta.

After this weekend at Tennessee, the Gamecocks travel to No. 10 Arkansas to take on the Razorbacks in a 7:15 p.m. ET game on ESPN, and then come back home to take on Florida.  The next few weeks should tell you just how good these Gamecocks are.

Tennessee is coming in off of a pair of big losses from two of the best teams in college football.

They lost 38-7 to No. 1 LSU two weeks ago and are now coming off of a 37-6 loss at No. 2 Alabama.  These two types of losses can really have an effect on a team's psyche.

The Vols have lost more than just these games however.  QB Tyler Bray, who was the SEC's leading passer has gone down with an injury and Matt Simms, his backup, was replaced last week with redshirt freshman and Rock Hill, SC native Justin Worley, who will be making his first career start at the collegiate level Saturday night.

With the Vols coming off of two embarrassing losses and a freshman making his debut under center, Tennessee will need a strong gameplan to win this Saturday.

I expect to see a lot of running back Tauren Poole for Tennessee.  He has carried the ball for 462 yards on 113 carries this season and two touchdowns.  The Vols may  be relying on him to balance the attack and try to take some of the pressure off of Worley in his first career start.  Look for a lot of Poole in this one.

If the Gamecocks are able to run the ball effectively without Lattimore in the game, stop Tauren Poole and make the Tennessee offense one dimensional, and improve on third down defense to stop some of Tennessee's offensive rhythm, South Carolina should be able to win this game in Rocky Top.

Prediction:
#14 South Carolina 28  Tennessee 21

At First Glance: Tennessee

No. 14 South Carolina at Tennessee:
Time: 7:15 p.m. ET
Location: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, Tenn.
TV: ESPN2
Radio: 107.5 FM "The Game" (Columbia)
Line: South Carolina by 3.5

Tennessee Volunteers:
3-4 overall, 0-4 in SEC play

Last week:
Tennessee lost 37-6 to No. 2 Alabama

This season:
Tennessee started out with wins over Montana and Cincinatti, but have since fallen off the map in the SEC Eastern Division, losing four of their last five games, including a loss to No. 1 LSU.

Impact performer:
RB Tauren Poole hasn't had much action in Tennessee's pass-heavy offense. He's rushed for 462 yards this season and two touchdowns. With Tyler Bray out at QB with an injury, redshirt freshman Justin Worley is likely to start for the Vols this Saturday night and has yet to throw a pass in his young career, so look for Poole to get a lot more carries with such a young player at QB.

Previous four: tied 2-2
2010: South Carolina 38 Tennessee 24 (Columbia, SC)
2009: Tennessee 31 South Carolina 13 (Knoxville, TN)
2008: South Carolina 27 Tennessee 6 (Columbia, SC)

South Carolina at Mississippi State Preview

The South Carolina Gamecocks (5-1, 3-1) will travel to Starkville, Miss. this Saturday to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs (3-3, 0-3) for a 12:20 pm ET kickoff.

The Gamecocks are coming off of their best offensive outing of the season and their best game against a SEC opponent in school history.  South Carolina destroyed Kentucky last Saturday, 54-3, to move to 3-1 in the conference.

New starting quarterback Connor Shaw led the offense with 311 yards through the air and four touchdowns as the Gamecocks racked up 639 yards of total offense on the Wildcats.

“It was just time to call some plays and see what happened,” Spurrier said after the game. “I didn’t know if we could move it like this or not, but I knew we had to try.”

Shaw also showed an ability to scramble away from pressure when the pocket collapsed.  He carried the ball 15 times for 42 yards.

"We had a very good game plan as far as different formations, different strategies," Shaw said. "I wasn't as nervous as last time. I'd been there, done that. My offensive line came to me and told me they had my back."

One player who had to be happy to see Shaw throwing the ball around was Alshon Jeffery.  He was finally able to make a few plays on Saturday with the improved quarterback play.  He finished the game with six catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns.

"When the week started, (Spurrier) told us we were going to throw the ball a lot, we were going to air it out," said Jeffery post-game. "So that's what I expected."

Marcus Lattimore was able to reach the 100-yard mark, despite not seeming to be a main part of the initial gameplan for Coach Spurrier. He carried the ball 22 times for 102 yards.

Bruce Ellington was able to break open a big play, taking a direct snap 61 yards down the Kentucky sideline for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter.  This is the kind of versatility that Spurrier and the coaching staff knew Ellington could bring to the table.

"It was a great run," Ellington said after the win. "The line did a great job blocking and when I got into the endzone Alshon met me and the crowd was screaming, it was exciting."

The defense played another great game, holding Kentucky to just 96 yards of offense and three points.  It was the second time this season that the defense held a team to just three points.

"I know what we are and I know how we practiced this week," said Ellis Johnson after the game. "I know some things we do well and some things we don't do well and it's about their attitude.  I think they stepped up today."

Mississippi State is coming off of a 21-3 road win over non-conference opponent UAB, in a game which they trailed 3-0 at halftime.

Bulldog starting quarterback Chris Relf was replaced by Tyler Russell in the second half of Saturday's game and Russell threw for three touchdowns.  Russell finished the game 11-13 for 166 yards through the air.

RB Vic Ballard, the SEC's fifth leading rusher, was able to remain effective for Mississippi State, carrying the ball 19 times for 101 yards on the ground.

If the Bulldogs are going to be successful against South Carolina, they will need Ballard to have a strong game on the ground.  Carolina's defense has moved up into the top 10 defensively in the nation, so the Mississippi State offense may find it difficult to score points against the Gamecocks this weekend.  A balanced attack is what the Bulldogs will need and Vic Ballard will be the key to that.

I see the Gamecocks playing a hard fought road game this weekend, Marcus Lattimore getting more of a workload this Saturday, Connor Shaw managing the game well, and South Carolina winning a close one.

Prediction:
#15 South Carolina 24  Mississippi State 20

---
The Gamecocks dismissed former QB Stephen Garcia from the team on Tuesday after he failed to meet requirements of his reinstatement with the program.  A mix of alcohol and marijuana was found in his system after a drug test, and the oft-suspended fifth year senior is now gone for good.  Garcia finished his career with over 7,500 passing yards, 47 touchdowns and 41 interceptions.  He was 20-14 as a starter and finishes as the third best statistical quarterback in school history.

South Carolina vs. Kentucky Preview

Click Here for the Post & Cocky Preview Show: South Carolina vs. Kentucky

The No. 18 South Carolina Gamecocks (4-1, 2-1) will host the Kentucky Wildcats (2-3, 0-2) in a SEC Eastern Division game this Saturday afternoon at Williams Brice Stadium.  Kickoff is set for 12:21 ET and the game will be televised by SEC Network.

Kentucky should have fond memories of the Gamecocks as they came from behind to defeat South Carolina last season 31-28 in Lexington, a week after the Gamecocks knocked off No. 1 Alabama.

"Kentucky is a team that beat us last year," said Head Coach Steve Spurrier. "In fact they beat us very similarly to the game we lost last week. They scored on their last play when they had it. We had a defensive play there. We sort of got in field goal range, but something happened each time and we didn't get an attempt each time."

This season, however, the Gamecocks are coming off of an unexpected loss rather than an unexpected win.

The Wildcats have struggled so far this season and they have yet to play competitively against an SEC opponent.  They've lost 48-10 at home to then-No. 15 Florida and are coming off of a 35-7 beat down at the hands of the No. 1 LSU Tigers in a game which they only totaled 155 yards of offense.  Kentucky has lost their last three games.

Kentucky features a variety of defensive looks which could pose a problem for Connor Shaw, who is making his second start of the season in place of a struggling Stephen Garcia.

"They (Kentucky) have a lot of stuff," Spurrier said of Kentucky's defense. "They blitz from everywhere - zone blitzes and man blitzes. They have a lot of defenses, which is unusual for Kentucky. These guys are all over the place. LSU had 14 at halftime but they didn't really go up and down the field against Kentucky's defense last week at all."

Kentucky's offense has struggled throughout the season, ranking 113th in both passing yards per game and points per game and also rank 96th in rushing yards per game.

If the Wildcats are going to be successful against Carolina, they must get their play makers involved early and often.  WR La'Rod King is the most dangerous weapon that Kentucky has and their offense is at its best whenever he is playing well.  With the possibility of Melvin Ingram missing this contest, Kentucky's offensive line has one less thing to worry about and may have a little more success against the Gamecock defense.

The Gamecocks are coming off of a tough 16-13 home loss to the defending national champion Auburn Tigers (4-1, 2-0), in another dismal offensive performance by Stephen Garcia and the entire offense.

Garcia finished the game with 160 yards passing and two interceptions to his one touchdown.  The two picks that he threw against Auburn brings his total to nine on the year, which is the most in the nation.  Yet another poor performance from the fifth-year senior has cost him the starting job as Spurrier announced Monday night that sophomore Connor Shaw would start this Saturday against Kentucky and try to give this offense a spark as the passing game is ranked 101st in the country in yards per game.

"We're making some changes on offense," said Spurrier at his weekly press conference. "We're going to give Connor Shaw his chance to replace Stephen. I know our offense looks pretty sorry. We're still seventh in the conference in offense like we were last year. We've moved up to sixth in defense. We're obviously not peaking as well as we'd hoped, but again we feel like Connor deserves a shot to see if he can perform at a higher level and get our offense going a little bit."

This will be Shaw's second start of the season as he was benched in week one against ECU and never returned to the field as Garcia led the Gamecocks to a 56-37 win.
South Carolina's defense played well against Auburn allowing only 16 points despite being on the field for 92 plays.  Melvin Ingram finished the game with 11 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one interception and was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.  The defense also forced four interceptions, two by C.C. Whitlock, and held Auburn's offense on several third down situations.
If the Gamecocks can get Connor Shaw comfortable with the offense this week, give Lattimore more carries, and forget the loss last week, I believe they can get right back into the win column against this struggling Kentucky team.

South Carolina vs. Auburn Preview

Click Here for the Post & Cocky Preview Show: Auburn at South Carolina

The No. 10 South Carolina Gamecocks (4-0, 2-0) will welcome the defending national champion Auburn Tigers (3-1, 1-0) to Williams Brice Stadium Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. ET for a rematch of last year's SEC Championship Game.

Auburn defeated South Carolina twice last year, 35-27 at Auburn in week four and again 56-17 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta for the SEC Championship in a game which Cam Newton torched Carolina's defense for six total touchdowns.

Unfortunately for Auburn, they've found it difficult to compete without the services of their Heisman Trophy winner.

In week one, Auburn needed a late charge, including an onside kick late in the 4th quarter, to defeat Utah State.  In week two, they played their best game so far, beating then-No. 16 Mississippi State in a shootout 41-34.  Week three featured Auburn's first loss since 2009 where they were defeated by the Clemson Tigers 38-24.  Last week, the Tigers gave up over 300 yards of total offense to the FAU Owls in a 30-14 win.

Auburn's defense is ranked near the bottom in all defensive statistical categories in the SEC and they are ranked 92nd in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 31 points per game.

"They've struggled. There's no question about that," said Head Coach Steve Spurrier on Tuesday. "I think they returned one or two starters on defense, maybe three. They've proven they can turn it around. Our defense was struggling until last week. We were struggling, but last week we put it together. Who knows how our offense will play against them, but it's true they've not played well defensively. They know that and I'm sure they'll try to get better."

On offense, Auburn returns the running back tandem of Michael Dyer and Ontario McCalebb, who helped Auburn rush for over 130 yards last week against FAU.

"He's a good running back," Spurrier said of Dyer. "He's one of the best in the conference, in the country. They're going to run him a bunch. We know that. They'll run him a lot more than certainly they did last year with Cam Newton back there. Dyer is their main guy. We have to stop him, and stop the run game no matter who you play."

Auburn is also 10th in the nation in kick return yardage, which has helped them to give good field position to their offense that is averaging 34.3 points per game, good for 43rd nationally.

South Carolina is coming off of their best defensive game of the season, a 21-3 win over previously unbeaten Vanderbilt (3-1, 0-1).

Jadeveon Clowney forced two fumbles, one of which was returned for a touchdown.  Melvin Ingram had four total tackles including two sacks and was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week.  Antonio Allen had a fumble recovery and Devin Taylor also recorded a sack for the Gamecock defense, who held Vanderbilt to only 77 total yards of offense.

"Antonio, he and Melvin, balls are attracted to them right now," said Spurrier. "They have a knack of running into the balls. That play the other night was interesting. Clowney knocked it out, Antonio scoops it up, Melvin is chasing and he fumbles it to Melvin. We've got some playmakers on defense, there's no question about that. Hopefully that will continue throughout the year. Antonio is an excellent pass rusher also. We haven't used him much yet. I'm sure we'll sneak him in and use him in that occasion."

Carolina's offense, however, was a different story.  QB Stephen Garcia struggled throughout the night, ending the game with four interceptions.  The bulk of the offensive output came through a jump ball that was deflected to Ace Sanders on a ball thrown into coverage and a screen play that went 52 yards to Marcus Lattimore before halftime.

"When a quarterback and the offense struggles, the offensive coordinator, the quarterback coach, the offensive line coach, the receivers coach, we all struggle," said Spurrier. "We're all a big part of whatever happens with the offense. That's why I don't think many of us were very happy last week because our phase of the game didn't perform well."

South Carolina will feature their "Wounded Warrior" uniforms this Saturday against Auburn.  The last time the Gamecocks wore these style of uniforms was against No. 1 Florida back in 2009 in a 24-14 loss.  The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game and all proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Project.

South Carolina vs. Vanderbilt Preview

Click Here for the Post & Cocky Preview Show: Vanderbilt at South Carolina

The No. 12 South Carolina Gamecocks (3-0, 1-0) will take on the Vanderbilt Commodores (3-0, 1-0) at Williams Brice Stadium Stadium on Saturday night.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 pm ET and the game will be televised by ESPN2.

South Carolina is coming off of a near-upset at the hands of the Navy Midshipmen (2-1) last Saturday night, winning by a slim three-point margin for the second week in a row, 24-21.

"We've played similarly every game," Spurrier said Tuesday in his weekly press conference.  "We keep thinking it's all going to come together. It hasn't quite yet but we're 3-0. That's a good sign that we've won a couple of games being behind in the 4th quarter. I don't think that's happened around here so we're doing some things."

Marcus Lattimore carried the Gamecock offense throughout the night, rushing for a career-high 246 yards and all three of South Carolina's touchdowns.

"We figured the best way to try to win the game was to just hand it to him and keep blocking," Spurrier said after Saturday's win.

Lattimore ran for more yards than the great George Rogers ever did in his illustrious collegiate career.  Rogers' best day was against Wake Forest in 1978, when he rushed for 237 yards against the Demon Deacons.

QB Stephen Garcia finished the game 18-25 for a season-high 204 yards and one interception, spreading the ball to seven different receivers.  WR Nick Jones led the receivers in yardage with 52 yards on three catches.  Lattimore and WR Jason Barnes each had four receptions.

Antonio Allen closed the game with an interception on 4th down that eliminated Navy's chances to upset Carolina, while Jay Wooten's 48-yard field goal as time expired in the first half proved to be the difference.

Vanderbilt is off to a red hot start and are coming fresh off of a 30-7 beatdown of Ole Miss in their SEC opener.

QB Larry Smith threw for 103 yards and rushed for a touchdown while Zac Stacy ran for 169 yards, including a 77 yard touchdown, on 11 carries.

Vanderbilt also leads the nation in interceptions after picking off Ole Miss QB Zack Stoudt five times last week, returning one of them for a 52-yard touchdown.  The Commodore defense is also top 20 in scoring defense, allowing only 14 points per game so far this season.

"We struggled with them down there last year at Vandy," said Spurrier.  "They play the coverages that most teams play. They disguise well with a zone blitz. You look at them on tape and guys are in position. They play fundamentally sound. That's why they're playing well right now. It will be good challenge for us no doubt about it. They're playing with a lot of confidence and a lot of fire. We'll see if we can match it."

With Vanderbilt and South Carolina off to 3-0 starts, it is safe to say this will be a huge game early on in the SEC East divisional race.  Expect Vanderbilt to come out fired up and ready to take on a divisional rival who they have had some success against in the past.  I expect to see another hard fought game as the Commodores have impressed so far this season.  With the first home SEC game, I like the Gamecocks to be ready and to play their best game of the season thus far and improve to 4-0 going into next week's game vs. Auburn.

Prediction:
No. 12 South Carolina 31  Vanderbilt 27

----
South Carolina's game with Vanderbilt comes in a week that the university has become the target of some scrutiny.  The University of South Carolina received a letter of allegations from the NCAA on Monday afternoon.  12 student-athletes were accused of staying in The Whitney Hotel for a reduced rate of $14.95 per night.  10 of those athletes named in the letter are current football players and two are women's track and field athletes.  Also, a booster was alleged to give up to $8,000 in impermissible benefits to potential recruits.  The university will have until Dec. 14 to respond to the letter and is expected to be in front of the board Feb. 17-18.

South Carolina vs. Navy Preview

Click Here for The Post & Cocky Preview Show: Navy at South Carolina

The No. 10 South Carolina Gamecocks (2-0) (1-0) will face the Navy Midshipmen (2-0) in their 2011 home opener Saturday night at Williams Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC.

The Gamecocks are coming off of a thrilling 45-42 win at rival Georgia to put themselves in first place in the SEC Eastern Division.  This is the first time since the 2000-01 seasons that South Carolina has defeated Georgia in back-to-back seasons.

South Carolina will be looking to use the momentum that they've built with consecutive wins away from home to start the season to open their 2011 home schedule with a win against a Navy team that runs a very efficient triple option offense.

Head Coach Steve Spurrier knows what Navy is capable of and was quick to point out that they are one of the best independent football programs in the country in his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

"Navy might be as good an independent school as there is in the country," Spurrier said. "They won 10, nine and eight games the last three years. I think they beat Notre Dame a couple of times. They're leading the nation in rushing offense right now. They run the triple option with fullback, quarterback and pitch guys so we'll have our hands full slowing down these guys."

The Gamecocks will be looking to stop a Navy rushing attack that has totaled 801 yards on the ground in their first two games, including 410 yards last week at Western Kentucky.  South Carolina allowed over 100 yards rushing last week to freshman RB Isaiah Crowell and will need to improve this week if they hope to stop Navy's attack.

"We've been watching these other teams that run (the triple option) and how they defend a team (with the same offense) when they play," Spurrier said in Tuesday's press conference.  "The Army-Navy (game) is our best game because both teams play the same offense and know how to defend each other. We know how to do it, and Coach Johnson has played against this style in his career. We just have to play fast, play assignment ball and get after them."

On the offensive side of the ball for Carolina, Marcus Lattimore has once again proven to be the staple of the Gamecock attack that ranks fourth in the country in points per game (50.5).  He carried the ball 27 times for 176 yards and a late touchdown last week against Georgia to seal the Gamecocks' 45-42 win.  He has totaled 288 yards on 50 carries and has scored four times so far this season.

"We finally started calling some different runs that got him freed up," said Spurrier.  "Marcus is an excellent runner and at the end of the game I didn't realize he had 176 yards. I thought he had about 110 or 120. It didn't seem like he had many. He was getting yards as we went; we just weren't finishing drives at the time. We don't forget about Marcus running the ball. That's what gives us a chance."

Stephen Garcia struggled to find his rhythm early in last week's game at Georgia, but settled down and led the Gamecocks from behind late in the game.  He finished the game with 142 yards through the air, one touchdown and two interceptions.  His favorite target, Alshon Jeffery, caught five balls for 85 yards and a score.

"I just think he was a little pumped up," Spurrier said of Garcia's performance at Georgia.  "He actually sort of said he felt like he needed to throw over that guy. He was a little high early and settled down a bit later. Our two best plays of the game were scramble plays where he rolled out the pocket and hit Alshon and hit Ace (Sanders). That may be our best play at this time."

South Carolina will be playing at home for the first time since they defeated Troy 69-24 last November.

Key Match-up:
South Carolina front seven vs. Navy option

If Carolina wants to win this game, they will need a gameplan to stop Navy's triple option.  The Navy rushing attack has proven difficult to stop in previous years and this year is no exception.  QB Kriss Proctor has rushed for 199 yards and three touchdowns in his first two appearances this year, while RB Alexander Teich has rushed for 167.  Carolina's front seven needs to have a plan of attack that will neutralize Navy's running game, and force them to throw the ball, which they rarely do.

Prediction:

South Carolina tops Georgia in SEC Opener

Melvin Ingram had never scored a touchdown in his career as a Gamecock.

Saturday, he found the end zone two different times.

The No. 12 South Carolina Gamecocks (2-0) (1-0) defeated the Georgia Bulldogs (0-2) (0-1) 45-42 in a classic SEC thriller in Athens, Ga.

After Carolina punted on their first two possessions, Georgia was able to draw first blood against the Gamecocks.

Freshman RB Isiah Crowell, who finished his SEC debut with 16 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown, busted off 15 and 28 yard gains in consecutive runs to start the Bulldog drive.  Two Richard Samuels runs and an incomplete pass later, the Georgia offense was forced to settle for a 37-yard FG from PK Blair Walsh to make it 3-0.

Carolina's 3rd drive ended abruptly after an ill-advised throw for 5th-year senior QB Stephen Garcia was intercepted by UGA defensive standout Bacarri Rambo, leaving the Bulldogs with great field position, and an opportunity to widen their lead.

Again, Isiah Crowell would lead Georgia into Gamecock territory where the drive would eventually stall and Walsh connected on a 39-yard kick to increase the lead to 6-0.

After another Carolina punt, the Bulldogs moved the ball back into field goal range for Walsh, where he missed a 33-yard kick that could have put Georgia up 9-0.

The Gamecocks were able to get on the board after the two teams traded punts once again.

Stephen Garcia hit Junior wide-out Alshon Jeffery on a 34-yard touchdown connection after a broken play forced Garcia to roll out, putting the Gamecocks up 7-6.

"It was just a scramble play," said Jeffery about the Gamecocks' first score.  "When the quarterback rolls out, coach Spurrier just tells up 'go deep'."

Georgia answered back with a big play of their own when QB Aaron Murray hooked up with a wide-open Rantavious Wooten to put the Bulldogs back on top 13-7.

Melvin Ingram then made his entrance.

After the Gamecocks stalled yet again, they lined up to punt from their own 32-yard line.  The snap went directly to Ingram who rumbled 68-yards to pay dirt to put the Gamecocks on top 14-13, where the lead would hold until halftime.

"We had it in the playbook all year," Ingram said. "We called it a couple times earlier in the game but it wasn't on so we didn't run it. This is another stepping stone. We're trying to get better every week."

The Bulldogs climbed back on top 20-14 when Isiah Crowell caught a 23-yard pass and later a 17-yard pass from Aaron Murray for a touchdown.

Carolina was able to use a couple big defensive plays to turn the momentum in their favor.  On the Bulldogs' next possession, Isiah Crowell fumbled at the South Carolina 39-yard line where CB Stephon Gilmore picked it up and weaved his way 56 yards inside the Georgia 10 to the 5-yard line.  Two plays later, Garcia scrambled into the end zone to make it 21-20 Carolina.

On the next possession, Antonio Allen picked off Aaron Murray and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown to widen the gap to 28-20.  Allen has scored a defensive touchdown in his last three games (at Clemson, vs. ECU, at Georgia).

Aaron Murray connected with Michael Bennett for a touchdown and then tied the game with a two-point conversion pass to Tavarres King, but a Jay Wooten 49-yard FG put the Gamecocks up 31-28.

Georgia continued to answer back, this time with Crowell's 15-yard touchdown to give the 'Dogs a 35-31 advantage, but Marcus Lattimore, who finished the game with 27 carries for 176 yards, scored his only touchdown with 3:28 left to give Carolina the lead for good.

Freshman defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney put the proverbial "nail in the coffin" when he sacked Aaron Murray and knocked the ball loose giving Melvin Ingram the opportunity to scoop and score his second touchdown of the afternoon.

A late Aaron Murray touchdown pass to King made the score 45-42 where it would become final.

The now No. 11 South Carolina Gamecocks will face the option attack of the Navy Midshipmen this Saturday in USC's 2011 home opener at 6 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
